What is DEF?
DEF is a non-toxic, colorless, odorless, and non-flammable mixture of deionized water and urea that is injected into the exhaust system of diesel vehicles. The substances in DEF help turn nitrogen oxide (NOx) – a harmful emission from diesel engines – into nitrogen and water vapor. These byproducts are much safer for people to breathe in and significantly less harmful to the environment than the original nitrogen oxide.
DEF is an important part of making sure that vehicles are abiding by the stringent federal emissions standards and using it reduces emissions by up to 90%.

What happens when you run out of DEF?
Running out of DEF won’t damage the engine, but for most systems, you will not be able to start your vehicle or you will have a significant reduction in performance.
What is the shelf life of DEF?
DEF has a shelf life of about 1 year when stored properly. You can extend its life to 2 years if it is stored at 75°F. Additionally, DEF is naturally clear/colorless. So if you notice discoloration, it’s likely contaminated or old.
Do all diesel engines need DEF?
DEF is used by vehicles with the Selective Catalytic Reduction system, therefore not all diesel engines require DEF. Older diesel engines might not have SCR systems, so they do not require it.
What are the storage requirements for DEF?
DEF should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight in a plastic, rubber, stainless steel, or titanium container. The ideal temperature for storing is between 12° and 77° F.
