What is Off-Road Diesel?

Off-road diesel is also known as dyed diesel, ultra-low sulfur diesel, and farm diesel. It is intended for vehicles, machinery, and equipment that don’t typically operate on public roads, such as those in the construction and agricultural industries. It is not taxed, so it tends to be cheaper than on-road (clear) diesel. It’s also illegal to use in on-road vehicles, like consumer cars.

Why is it Red?

Because off-road diesel is state and federally tax-exempt, it is dyed red so it is distinguishable from on-road (clear) diesel. It makes it easier for governing bodies to identify it for tax-purposes.

What Are Some of the Top Industries That Use Off-Road Diesel?

While many industries use diesel, only a select few industries use off-road (dyed) diesel. If you work with heavy-duty equipment, such as excavators, cranes, skid steers, bulldozers, tractors, and generators, you are likely familiar with off-road diesel. If you are not familiar with it, get in touch with us!

Where Can 3L Energy Deliver Your Off-Road Diesel?

Based out of Houston, Texas, 3L’s service territory includes Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona Colorado, Louisiana, and beyond.

Dyed diesel is also known as farm diesel because farms are the #1 industry who uses it.

Off-road diesel is often used in construction equipment such as cranes, bobcats, bulldozers, backhoes, and generators.

Similar to the construction industry, the mining industry uses off-road diesel in their equipment and machinery.

County Fairs and Carnivals

Carnivals and county fairs can used red diesel because they are not transporting anything on public roads.
